Kochi is considered commercial capital of Kerala for the following reasons:
1. It has a commercial port. So the possible flow of imports-exports and movement of commercial goods get this gateway to rest of the world by sea route.
2. Another prominent activity seen in the city is its dealing in gold and gold ornaments. Due to heavy connection of the city with Gulf countries, the gold business is thriving here.
3. Spices trading and possible bulk movement from the port city make Kochi another favourite destination for related commercial activities. Though spices are cultivated and traded in many parts of Kerala, yet Kochi makes its dominance felt because of the port gateway.
4. Kochi is strategically located in the Arabian sea and a possible hub for trade with gulf and western countries, may be in the time to come can play a far more dominant role in India's international trade with other destinations.
